Former South African junior international Luke Fleurs was slain in a carjacking in Johannesburg, police said on Thursday.
The 24-year-old was shot in the chest at a gas station on Wednesday night.
It is believed that the assailants fled in Fleurs’ vehicle.
“While waiting to be served by the attendant, he was confronted by two armed males,” police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo told journalists.
Masondo verified that no arrests had occurred.
Fleurs played every minute for South Africa in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and that same year he was called up to the senior team for World Cup qualifications against Ethiopia, however he did not make it off the bench and went uncapped.
